Mees, After Evening Dip, New Year’s Day, 2002 (2005)

09_rgb_2005_mees.jpg

Light box with colour transparency,
94.8 × 136 × 12.7 cm

Photography, though less prominent than film in Steve McQueen’s artistic practice, makes a striking appearance in Mees, After Evening Dip, New Year’s Day, 2002. The way in which the aesthetically compelling image captures a special moment is typical of the artist’s approach. The presentation of the photograph not as a print but in a light box, the graininess of the image and the implied sequence of immersion in freezing water, getting out of the water and then drying oneself seems to take its cue from the temporal sequence of filming. Pictured in the photograph is Mees, a friend of the artist’s family in Amsterdam, McQueen’s adopted hometown.
